The Origin and Pawn Analysis of Writing Samples of Korean Adults who Stutter
Lee Kyung-Jae

Shin Moon-Ja
Abstract
Background & Objectives: Adults who stutter commonly believe that they cannot control their speech or disfluency, reflecting external locus of control. Questionnaire-type measures have been used to determine intrinsic features of adults who stutter, including locus of control. However, such questionnaire-type measures which include a limited number of items may not be able to sensitively indicate individualized changes in adults who stutter. However, content analysis of freely-spoken or written narratives with object criteria can sensitively and reliably indicate changes in adults who stutter. The current study analyzed the writing samples of Korean adults who stutter using the Origin and Pawn Scales, which is a content analysis scale.

Methods: The writing samples of ten Korean adults who stutter were analyzed using the Origin and Pawn Scales.
Results: Korean adults who stutter showed high Pawn scores and low Origin scores, a pattern also indicated by English-speaking adults who stutter. Moreover, an independent rater reliably analyzed the writing samples using the Origin and Pawn Scales, after some practice.

Discussion & Conclusion: Results of the current study show that the Origin and Pawn Scales can be reliably applied to Korean adults who stutter for use as an assessment tool.
